We Love Exploitation…Mondo-Tastic
Isn’t it strange how many bad films have such brilliant
posters? The lavishly tooled collection Exploitation Poster
Art brings together 200 of the very best/ worst of their kind.
Ever-lurid, over-the-top and over-sensational, they’re also
a great reminder of their times and attendant cultural obsessions; The
Inside Of The White Slave Trade (1913), Sex Maniac (1934), Marihuana – Assassin
Of Youth (1937), Black Market Babies (1945), Unwed
Mother (1958), Naked As Nature Intended (1961), The
Black Gestapo (1975). And lines like: “Scene after scalding
scene NEVER before depicted on the living motion picture screen”,
are certainly a lot more enticing than: “contains sexual
content”. Mind you, the one for Young Man With A Horn was
a bit of a disappointment… Exploitation Poster Art, edited
by Tony Nourmand and Graham Marsh, published by Aurum Press, £18.99.
There’ll be an auction of over 300 posters from Tony Nourmand’s
collection at Christie’s, South Kensington, London, SW7 (020
7839 9060), on Thursday December 8 th. www.christies.com
